UPDATE: August 26, 2025 @ 4:00 p.m. – Emergency Water Usage Restrictions to Continue Until Noon on Wednesday, August 27, 2025

The emergency water restrictions put into place earlier today will remain in place until 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to allow water levels in our reservoirs to return to normal and preserve water for domestic and emergency use. The restrictions on outdoor non-essential water uses are as follows:

  • Prohibition of all lawn/turf irrigation,
  • Prohibition of all irrigation of gardens and ornamental plants,
  • Prohibit all of the following: ornamental fountains that use drinking water, car washing except at facilities that recycle, all non-emergency hydrant use (including device permits) and water main flushing, dust control using water at construction sites, washing of sidewalks, streets, decks, driveways, except as necessary for public health/safety, washing of buildings, filling or adding to landscape ponds or public/private swimming pools,
  • Prohibit all non-essential water use. Indoor essential water uses, such as water for drinking, toilet use, and other public health uses are still permitted.

In addition to Medford water customers, this message also applies to properties within Central Point, Eagle Point, Phoenix, Talent, Jacksonville, and White City. These restrictions are mandatory.

Today’s power failure at the Robert A. Duff Water Treatment Plant occurred at a point in the electrical system which prevented the use of either utility or our existing generator back-up power. Pacific Power assisted with de-energizing the treatment plant so that evaluation and repairs to the on-site electric infrastructure could commence safely, and crews have worked diligently to repair the electrical gear. Our primary Big Butte Springs source has remained functional and remains safe to drink but does not alone supply enough water to meet summertime usage. During this event the plant could not supply the additional treated water necessary to meet peak summer demands, and mandatory water restrictions were put into place.

Keeping these restrictions in place until August 27, 2025, at noon will allow the plant to become fully operational and the system to recover to normal levels. Our water remains safe to drink, and normal indoor domestic water usage for drinking, toilet use, and other public health use is still permitted.

This morning, Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Medford Water experienced a power outage due to multiple on-site electric conductor failures at the Robert A. Duff Water Treatment Plant. Repairs to electric conductors are in progress, with a goal to restore full power or a reconnection to our on site generators, however it may be some time before the system is fully functional, and during this time the plant cannot supply treated water necessary to meet current peak summer demands.

Medford Water projects that the restrictions will be in place until the plant is fully operational, able to meet system demand, and the system has recovered to normal levels. Restrictions are critical with the water treatment plant offline and we thank the community for responding actively, which has decreased demand substantially. Our secondary Big Butte Springs water source is sufficient to provide all winter-time water demand levels, and it remains fully functional during this time. Normal indoor domestic water usage is still permitted, though every reduction in use makes a difference.
