Are You “2 Weeks Ready”? – Stay Informed

As National Preparedness Month comes to a close, make sure you and your family are informed in case of an emergency or disaster:

  • Sign up for emergency alerts in your area at OR-Alert.
  • Make sure your cell phone has Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled.
  • Know evacuation routes in your area.

Being 2 Weeks Ready means having a plan and enough supplies—including water—for you and your household to survive on your own for a minimum of two weeks. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM’s) 2 Weeks Ready program empowers Oregonians to take the following fundamental steps:

  1. Make an Emergency Plan
  2. Build an Emergency Kit
  3. Be Informed

National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Experts recommend that Oregon citizens proactively prepare to be self-sufficient for at least two weeks after a disaster, known as “2 Weeks Ready”. This is because first responders may not be able to reach everyone impacted within hours or even days afterward, especially in the event of a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.
