Are You “2 Weeks Ready”? – Making a Kit
- September 16, 2025 | Category: Customer Service, Your Water
Take the opportunity this September, National Preparedness Month, to make sure you and your family are 2 Weeks Ready when an emergency or disaster occurs.
So how do you prepare to be “2 Weeks Ready”?
Being 2 Weeks Ready means having a plan and enough supplies—including water—for you and your household to survive on your own for a minimum of two weeks. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM’s) 2 Weeks Ready program empowers Oregonians to take the following steps:
- Make an Emergency Plan
- Build an Emergency Kit
- Be Informed
Once you’ve made a plan, you’ll need to build an emergency kit. Water is central to your family’s cooking, hygiene, and basic survival needs, making it key to your preparation efforts. Find out how much water you need on our Emergency Preparedness page. Also learn how to assemble an emergency supply kit for food, waste and hygiene, shelter, and first aid needs at Ready.gov or American Red Cross.
National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Experts recommend that Oregon citizens proactively prepare to be self-sufficient for at least two weeks after a disaster, known as “2 Weeks Ready”. This is because first responders may not be able to reach everyone impacted within hours or even days afterward, especially in the event of a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.
