A Water-Efficient Home for the Holidays

Are you hosting for the Thanksgiving holiday?
More people at home often means more water use, but a few small changes can make a big difference! Try these simple ways to save water (and money, AND energy) this holiday season:

- Thaw smart.
If turkey (or any frozen feast) is on the menu, defrost it in the refrigerator instead of under running water. You’ll save about two gallons per minute, and keep your food at a safer temperature while you’re at it. - Scrape, don’t rinse.
Encourage guests to scrape plates instead of rinsing before washing. It’s an easy way to cut down on wasted water. - Let the dishwasher do the dishes.
Save time and water by skipping the sink entirely. Today’s ENERGY STAR dishwashers use under four gallons per load, far less than washing by hand, which can use more than two gallons per minute. Sit back, relax, and let the machine handle it! - Catch sneaky toilet leaks and curb excessive usage per flush.
Even a “silent” toilet can waste hundreds of gallons; use our free dye tablets to test for hidden leaks before the holidays hit (or call 541-774-2438 for other techniques).
More people at home also means more toilet flushing…Save water by upgrading to a newer WaterSense certified dual-flush, or 1.28-gallon or less per flush model that uses about 70 percent less water than a toilet installed prior to 1994, and 20 percent less than the current standard 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. Medford Water customers can earn a rebate of up to $85 with the purchase and installation which one of these models. For eligibility requirements and instructions, go to our Rebates Page.
