Partnership With Students on Fuel Shed Build Invests in Workforce Development

S+B James Construction Partners with South Medford High School Students on Fuel Shed Build for Medford Water Operation Center

S+B James Construction and Medford Water are proud to announce their collaboration with South Medford High School’s Innovation Academy “Hex 6” students on a unique, hands-on construction project benefiting the Medford Water Operation Center.

The project, funded by Medford Water, involved constructing a customized fuel island shed to house fuel controls at their new Operation Center. Rather than purchasing a prebuilt shed, project leaders invited local students to participate, providing invaluable real-world experience in the construction trades. Under professional guidance, students fabricated the shed components and completed on-site assembly.

“Our new Operation Center is more than just a new facility; it’s a commitment to our community’s future,” said Brad Taylor, General Manager of Medford Water. “This partnership with S+B James Construction and local students allows us to build careers in addition to walls and foundations. There is no foundation more vital to our region than clean, reliable drinking water, and by investing in these students, we are ensuring that the future stewards of our water system have the skills needed to keep our community safe, healthy, and thriving for generations to come.”

Henry Padden, Project Engineer at S+B James Construction, conceived the idea, recognizing an opportunity to connect students with skilled trades while delivering a practical solution for the new Operation Center.

“This collaboration demonstrates the positive impact that creative thinking and community involvement can have in inspiring the next generation of builders,” said RJ Holly, Project Manager at S+B James Construction. “These students are gaining invaluable real-world experience, developing problem-solving skills, and witnessing firsthand how their contributions make a difference in the local community.”

Six South Medford High School students, led by the Construction Tech teacher, Taylor Helgeson, participated in the project, learning vital skills in planning, fabrication, teamwork, and hands-on construction. Their efforts resulted in a completed structure that serves a critical operational purpose. Students dedicated 2 weeks, with 96 hours of in-class building and 24 hours of on-site assembly.

This initiative aims to inspire student interest in construction and showcase the importance of skilled trades. By connecting students with local contractors and industry leaders, the partnership highlights rewarding career opportunities and the positive community impact of construction professions.
