Protecting the Watershed
Human activity directly impacts water quality in the watersheds. Storm sewers on city streets drain rain and snow melt directly into creeks and rivers and should not be used for waste disposal.
The community can play an important part in protecting water resources by:
- Not pouring motor oil, chemicals or other waste down storm sewers;
- Recycling used motor and heating oil;
- Washing vehicles in an approved car wash to prevent soapy water from entering storm sewers;
- Disposing of trash in designated park receptacles or at disposal facilities;
- Maintaining and regularly pumping septic systems;
- Bagging and placing pet waste in the garbage and keep livestock waste covered;
- Using slow release or organic fertilizers at or below recommended rates. Avoid the use of fertilizers with added herbicides;
- Using chemical toilets or other similar devices when camping or visiting parks;
- And by being careful with campfires, never leaving a fire unattended.
