Join us in the Mayor's Challenge

Mayor Gary Wheeler is asking Medford residents to take part in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation this April. In 2016, Medford finished in 13th place within our population category, and Mayor Wheeler aims to boost our commitment this year.

“By saving water, our community saves energy, money and valuable resources. Even small actions, such as fixing a leaky faucet or sweeping the driveway instead of using a hose, can add up to big water savings over time,” says Mayor Wheeler. “I hope Medford residents will join me in pledging to conserve water, save energy and reduce pollution in our community.”

The National Mayor’s Challenge, presented by the Wyland Foundation, asks residents to go online to www.mywaterpledge.com during the month of April and take a series of simple, informative pledges to conserve water, energy and other natural resources. In addition to helping build a greener community, participants from the cities with the highest percentage of residents taking the challenge are entered to win a new Toyota Prius Prime, home improvement gift cards, water saving fixtures, and hundreds of other prizes.

“I’d sure love to see Medford residents win those prizes,” Mayor Wheeler says. “I challenge our community to go online and take the pledge. It’s so easy, and it’s a great reminder to be thinking of ways to reduce water and energy waste in our daily routines.”

Inside the house, people can save water by simply changing their shower heads and sink aerators to lower flow types. Toilet rebates of up to $85 are available from the Medford Water Commission (MWC) for replacing older, higher gallonage flush toilets with WaterSense labeled ones. Other less expensive water to save water are to turn off the faucet when brushing teeth, when washing the dishes or preparing food.

Outdoors, make sure all hoses have self-closing nozzles or timers on sprinklers. This can save hundreds, even thousands of gallons of water. Free sprinkler checkups are available from the MWC Conservation Team that include helping customers to understand and adjust their timers for proper sprinkling, finding sources of water waste such as irrigation leaks, and providing verbal and written recommendations for modifications or repairs. Additionally, MWC has a weekly Lawn Water Infoline at (541) 774-2460 that gives sprinkling times based on current weather and sprinkler type, along with other helpful landscape tups.

The sixth annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota. Last year, residents from over 4,100 cities in all 50 U.S. states pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by 1.9 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 42 million pounds, and prevent more than 87,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. The challenge goes beyond recent drought issues and looks at the ways our water use will affect the future of our communities - from how we grow food to reducing polluted runoff.
